Abstract Carolyn Murray-Woolley's «Early Stone Houses of Kentucky» is a thorough historical and architectural study of early Kentucky housing and the families who settled the region in the colonial and early postcolonial periods. The author pays particular attention to the immigrants from Northern Ireland, especially the Ulster and Scots-Irish, who played a significant role in the settlement of Kentucky. Based on fieldwork, genealogical material and architectural analysis, Murray-Woolley examines the origins of building traditions, the layout and design of early stone houses. It is shown that Ulstermen, much more often than other ethnocultural groups of settlers, used stone as a primary building material. Their houses were characterized by hall-parlor layouts and gabled chimneys - architectural features associated with the traditions of Northern Ireland. The author examines not only the buildings themselves, but also the social and cultural environment of their owners: the origin of the families, their landholdings, economic activities, and their role in the political, religious, and educational life of Kentucky. The stone house appears in the book not simply as an architectural object, but as an important source for studying the lives of early settlers, their cultural traditions, and the process of transforming the frontier territory into a stable agricultural region. The publication is given significant value by detailed illustrative material: modern photographs of historical houses are combined with measurements, architectural drawings and plans, which allow reconstructing the original appearance of the buildings and tracing the features of their design. Separate sections are devoted to construction technology, stone houses of owners of other ethnic origins, the geography of settlements and the genealogy of the owners.
