ST ISAAC'S CATHEDRAL, one of the finest cathedral churches built in Europe in the nineteenth century, is a unique phenomenon in Russian architecture. The tall, centrally planned, domed edifice is one of the buildings which punctuate the skyline of Leningrad. A dominant feature of two great ensembles, St Isaac's Square and Decembrists' (formerly Senate) Square, the Cathedral, to a large extent, determined their general character by its monumental grandeur and powerful architectural forms.
